The duties of the Wiper include cleaning and preservation of engine department spaces, systems, equipment and equipment components. The Wiper will be required to use tools such as chipping hammers, scrapers, needle guns, paint brushes, wire brushes, brooms, mops and is familiar in the use of hand and power tools. Participants receive formal training, on-the-job training and work experience. Participants can advance into the Wiper Advancement Program (WAP) or the Deck Engineer Machinist Apprentice Program (DAP). See website for position openings.

Please see this important notice from the U.S. Coast Guard regarding the following endorsements: Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Steward's Department (FH) which are required for all culinary positions.
